The North Carolina chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society held their annual conference on May 1 & 2 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center Hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina. This annual event continues to grow, drawing more than 250 attendees representing healthcare delivery organizations from across the southeast. In addition, 26 companies exhibited their products and services. “We strongly believe that this conference fulfills the mission of NC HIMSS to lead change in the healthcare information and management systems field through knowledge sharing, advocacy, collaboration, innovation, and community affiliations,” stated chapter president, Nathan White.
Rick Cnossen, Worldwide Director, Intel HLS Program Office, where he is responsible for strategy and product enabling, presented one of the plenary sessions, Imperatives to Harness mHealth. He is past president of the Continua Health Alliance and is a member of the HL7 Board Advisory Council.
Congresswoman Renee Ellmers presented an additional plenary session, An Update on Healthcare IT and Where We are Going. Congresswoman Ellmers is a rising star and leader in the U.S. House of Representatives where she works to promote common sense policies geared toward protecting liberty, protecting the free enterprise system, and limiting the growth of the federal government.
In addition to the plenary sessions, the conference included an ICD-10 workshop discussing the impact on organizations and vendors of the ‘doc fix bill’ and extending compliance from Oct. 1, 2014 to Oct. 1, 2015. Another panel focused on collaborative solutions from the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance (NCHICA) selected activities.
The two-day event began with a golf tournament and included pertinent healthcare technology education sessions on current industry topics including Meaningful Use, ICD-10, clinical and quality-related initiatives, and various technologies to advance healthcare. “Thanks to our attendees over the past several years NC HIMSS has grown in participation, range of content, and networking opportunities”, said Nathan White, president.
