Thanks to everyone who attended the annual conference – you made it a great success!
The North Carolina chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society held their annual conference on June 8 & 9 at the Hilton Riverside Hotel in Wilmington, NC. This annual event continues to provide an opportunity for more than 250 attendees representing healthcare delivery organizations from across the southeast to come together to learn the latest and best practices in healthcare IT. In addition, 30 companies exhibited their latest products and services.
Jack Barto, President and CEO of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, discussed the effect of ongoing groundswell changes in healthcare, including the American Reinvestment Recovery Act, Meaningful Use, Medicare reimbursement, payment tied to quality, managing population health, and what community hospital leaders are doing to adapt to the rapidly changing healthcare environment.
Emphasizing that all healthcare IT ultimately revolves around the patient experience, retired healthcare executive Thomas Koontz discussed his experience as a patient through various health challenges. Marc Malloy, Vice President, Health Plan Solutions, for Mission Health in Asheville, NC, supplemented the discussion on how to reach further for those technological advances that can enable the vision of improved clinical outcomes, lower costs and make the interaction with the health care system a much better experience for everyone.
In addition to the plenary sessions, the two-day event included 27 educational sessions on pertinent healthcare technology. Topics covered ranged from ICD-10 and mobilizing your workforce, to the value of electronic Health Information Exchange (HIE) and how deploying an Enterprise Analytics Program can accelerated the path toward data-driven decision making and evidence-based care.
“Thanks to our attendees over the past several years NC HIMSS has grown in participation, range of content, and networking opportunities”, said Sulaiman Sulaiman, NC HIMSS president.
