School is out for many across North Carolina and summer is underway! NC HIMSS extends wishes for an enjoyable summer and a very special June for all fathers across the state! Several events are celebrated in June and provide opportunities for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together, advocate for better health outcomes, and promote awareness about various health conditions. Some notable events include:
Men’s Health Month to heighten awareness of preventable health issues, encourage early detection and treatment, and promote healthy lifestyles among men.
Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month dedicated to increasing awareness about Alzheimer’s and related dementias.
National Cancer Survivors Day was celebrated on the first Sunday in June to honor and support cancer survivors while raising awareness about ongoing challenges.
World Blood Donor Day (June 14) highlights the importance of safe blood transfusion and acknowledges life-saving contributions of blood donors.
International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26) raises awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and global efforts to combat illicit drug production and trafficking.
LGBTQ+ Pride Month dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride.

NC HIMSS annual conference. Abstracts are due by July 10!

Scholarships
The NC HIMSS scholarship is newly named the Linda Hoover Academic Scholarship, in honor and memory of Linda Hoover who passed away in December 2022 after supporting our chapter for many years. This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to provide recognition and financial assistance to a current NC HIMSS member toward their undergraduate or graduate degree program related to health management or health information technology. Submit your application for the scholarship here.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: A free webinar was held on June 22. Sameer Doshi presented “I Didn’t Tell My Boss I was Blind When I Interviewed at Microsoft”. Watch for our next DEI event!
Cybersecurity: Spring Social and Cyber Panel
Panel discussion “Healthcare Cyber Resiliency: Lessons Learned from the Moore County Power Grid Attack” was held on May 17 in coordination with the NC HIMSS Spring Social. Panelists from a local health system, the FBI, and DHS shared best practices for anticipating, and navigating, ongoing cybersecurity risks and challenges.
